On Duty

Duty, by definition, is a responsibility to maintain a principle, even if it’s at odds with the status quo. America is duplicitous: it has its values and its reality. I believe it is our duty to stand behind America’s principles and denounce any part of reality that is at odds with those principles. Although duty insinuates loyalty, dissent is also a major facet of duty. It can look like taking a knee during the National Anthem or protesting an unjust war or fighting big companies undermining our rights. Duty is knowing who you are and sticking to it. Duty is an intrinsic sense of obligation, and it is not tangent on fads or laws or trends.
